Offset Deformable barrier (EEVC WG11 - ECE R94) - Frontal

The Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier (ODB-CEVE-R94) is a calibrated kinetic energy absorber used for full scale crash testing in automotive passive safety and crashworthiness field. This product is based on original works of the European Enhanced Vehicle-Safety Committee Working Group 11 (EEVC WG11).

Based on the Aluminum Honeycomb technology, this barrier is used by car manufacturers and test laboratories worldwide for the assessment of motor vehicle passenger's protection in case of frontal offset collision according to following standards:
  • ECE R94 regulation
  • European Directive 96/79/CE, European NCAP, Australian NCAP, Japan NCAP, etc.

The offset frontal crash test simulates colliding with another vehicle. In this test, 40% of the test vehicle, on the driver's side, initially makes contact with the deformable aluminum barrier at the impact speed defined regarding standards requirements. A dummy measures the likely injuries in this type of crash.

The total quantity of kinetic energy to be absorbed by the barrier is between 108 and 120 kJ.

Mobile Deformable Barrier (EEVC WG 13 - ECE R95 am.3) - Side Impact

The Mobile Deformable Barrier for European side impact (MDB) is a calibrated kinetic energy absorber used for full scale crash testing in automotive passive safety and crashworthiness field. This product is based on original works of the European Enhanced Vehicle-Safety Committee Working Group 13 (EEVC WG 13).

Based on the honeycomb technology, this barrier is particularly used by car manufacturers and test laboratories worldwide for the assessment of the passengers' protection in motor vehicles in case of side impact according to following standards:

  • ECE R95 am.3, Directive 96/27/CE
  • Euro NCAP, etc...

The side-impact test consists of running a trolley of 950 kg into the driver's side of the test vehicle. The front of the trolley is equipped with the aluminum deformable barrier, which aims at simulating the front of the impactor vehicle. The impact speed with the vehicle is defined for each test configuration. A dummy measures the likely injuries in this type of crash. The total of the kinetic energy to be absorbed by the barrier is between 40 and 50 kJ.

Advanced European Mobile Deformable Barrier (Euro NCAP v1.0) - Side Impact

Advanced European Mobile Deformable Barrier face (so called AE-MDB) is the result of more than 10 years of research undertaken in collaboration with EEVC WG13; the EC project APROSYS and Euro NCAP.

Many tests (static & dynamic) performed in-house and to Euro NCAP certified laboratories have been used to develop the final AE-MDB barrier face, which is manufactured according to the “AE-MDB - barrier specification Euro NCAP v1.0 – 23rd Feb. 2013”.

The AE-MDB Barrier is certified for official Euro NCAP side impact barrier testing under the 2015 test protocol. the new test procedure include:
  • AE-MDB barrier face as the representative of the current European fleet, including SUV
  • an increase in the mass of the trolley
  • the addition of a rear occupant dummy
  • etc.

Previous AE-MDB Barrier definition like the V3.9 are still available upon request.

Progressive Deformable Barrier - Frontal Impact

The deformable barrier for frontal offset test called PDB is a calibrated kinetic energy absorber used for full scale crash testing in automotive passive safety and crashworthiness field. This product is based on works of several European working groups and car manufacturers. The PDB barrier is part of the ECE R94 regulation improvement proposal ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSP/2007/12.

Based on the honeycomb technology, this barrier proposes an evolution of the assessment of motor vehicles in case of frontal impact in possible futur replacement of the ODB-CEVE-R94.

The offset frontal crash test PDB simulates a colliding with another vehicle. In this test, 50% of the test vehicle makes contact with the aluminum deformable barrier, at an impact speed of 60 km/h. Dummies allow assessment of the vehicle self-protection standard. The deformation of the barrier is investigated to assess the aggressively of the tested vehicle.

A lot of tests in different configurations and research programs have been carried out with the PDB barriers.

MDB-NHTSA FMVSS214 - Side Impact

The mobile deformable barrier FMVSS214 is a calibrated kinetic energy absorber used for full scale crash testing in automotive passive safety and crashworthiness field.

Based on the honeycomb technology, this barrier is particularly used by car manufacturers and test laboratories worldwide for the assessment of passenger's safety in motor vehicle in case of side impact in accordance with the following standards:
  • American standard NHTSA FMVSS214

The side-impact test consists in throwing a trolley on the driver's side of the vehicle. The front of the trolley is equipped with the aluminum deformable barrier, which aims at simulating the front of the impactor vehicle. The impact speed with the vehicle is 33.5 mph. A dummy measures the likely injuries in this type of collision.

The total quantity of kinetic energy to be absorbed by the barrier is between 124 and 139 kJ.
